Fairtrade Products & The Fairtrade Mark
There are over 1500 Fairtrade products available in Wales, all of which can be identified by the Fairtrade Mark.
The Fairtrade Mark can only be displayed on products that meet internationally recognised Fair Trade criteria. All products that display the mark are independently audited to ensure they are genuinely providing a fair deal for producers. It's your guarantee that a product is fairly traded.
The Fairtrade Foundation licenses the Fairtrade Mark in Britain. It only allows it to be used on products which meet internationally recognised standards. The supplier (brand-owner or main national distributor) must sign the Foundation's Licence Agreement which provides a licence to use the Mark. Licensees are independently audited.
Some items, such as fairly traded handicrafts for example, cannot be awarded the Fairtrade mark. These items can still be just as beneficial in helping producers in developing countries to work their way out of poverty. Many shops and importers register with the British Association of Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS) to authenticate their Fair Trade status.
